Making Tax Digital – MTD

From the 6th of April 2026 HMRC will implement Making Tax Digital for Income Tax.

Simply put, this is a new way for sole traders and landlords to report their income and expenses to HMRC in the new tax year. Anyone with an annual income over £50,000 from property or self-employment must use this new system from the 6th of April.

If you fit this criteria you or an agent will have to:

  • Create and store digital records of your property or self-employment income and expenses
  • Send quarterly updates to HMRC
  • Submit a tax return to HMRC and pay tax by January 31st the following year

Please see this article from HMRC for more in depth information.

Here at ITStorm we will offer three solutions to our clientele:

  • DIY – you would do it yourself, using HMRC approved software to send quarterly updates and an end of year tax return.
  • Provide the software – You would use your own software to send quarterly updates and we would complete and end of year tax return on yourself, the cost would be £180 due at year end.
  • We do it all – We would use our software, send all quarterly updates and complete the year end tax return on your behalf, cost would be a monthly charge of £33 inc VAT.
